TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) - A jury has convicted two Ohio businessmen on federal charges in an alleged multimillion-dollar fraud scheme involving the sale of Iraqi currency and nonexistent hedge funds.
Sixty-six-year-old Bradford Huebner (HEEB’-nur) of Ottawa Hills was convicted Thursday in Toledo on dozens of counts, including wire fraud and conspiracy to commit wire fraud. Sixty-seven -year-old Charles Emmenecker of Sylvania was convicted on single counts of those two charges.
They’ll be sentenced later. A third defendant was acquitted in the scheme.
The Blade (https://bit.ly/1gntCTp ) reports they testified they bought the currency and hedge fund seats thinking Iraq would eventually revalue the currency.
Huebner’s attorney says Huebner was conned by a fourth defendant who pleaded guilty earlier, and they’ll appeal.
Emmenecker’s attorney says they’re disappointed and it’s too soon to comment on appeal prospects.
