GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (AP) - A 16-year-old boy is dead after falling 100 feet in the Colorado National Monument near Grand Junction.

The teen fell Tuesday evening from an overlook area providing a view of the Independence Monument, a prominent tower of rock that rises from the floor of the red rock canyon. Three other people were with him.

Superintendent Lisa Eckert told The Daily Sentinel (https://bit.ly/1tjOQ74 ) that the boy crossed the overlook’s railing and made his way over to another viewing area when he apparently fell onto a shelf about 300 feet above the canyon’s floor.

The boy was still alive when a search and rescue team arrived about an hour later. Members started treating him but he died before they could remove him from the ledge.
