HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. (AP) - The fire chief on Hilton Head Island is retiring next month after serving in the fire department for more than three decades.
The Island Packet of Hilton Head reports (https://bit.ly/1lPhxE9) that Chief Lavarn Lucas started as a volunteer firefighter in 1979 and became a paid firefighter with the Hilton Head Fire District two years later. That was two years before the island was incorporated in 1983.
Lucas has served as fire chief since 2007.
He will be succeeded by Deputy Chief of Operations Brad Tadlock, who’s been with the department more than 20 years.
