NEW YORK (AP) - The owner of two tenement buildings on Manhattan’s Upper East Side has been denied permission to tear them down to build a luxury high-rise.
The Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday unanimously voted to protect the six-story buildings on York Avenue between 64th and 65th streets.
Known as the First Avenue Estates, they were designated landmarks in 2006. They were constructed between 1898 and 1915. They have courtyards that allow light and air into the apartments.
The New York Times (https://nyti.ms/R88BzU ) says the commission also rejected Stahl Organization’s analysis that the units could only bring $600 a month. The commission’s own study showed they could get at least $860.
A spokesman for Stahl said the developer planned to appeal.
