GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - A judge has sentenced 20-year-old Gulfport man to prison for the murder of 19-year-old Retrick Matthews on June 30, 2012.

The Sun Herald reports (https://bit.ly/R81HuC ) Circuit Judge Roger Clark sentenced Diaz Easterling to a 40-year prison term Tuesday and suspended 10 years, leaving 30 to serve followed by five years of post-release supervision.

Easterling had pleaded guilty to second-degree murder.



Assistant District Attorney Crosby Parker says Matthews was shot near the Island View casino during a fight among recent high school graduates.

At his sentencing, Easterling confessed he fired a gun as he was running away from the fight.
