LYMAN, Maine (AP) - Three families whose children were allegedly abused at a now-closed Lyman day care center have filed lawsuits.

Three separate complaints filed last month in York County Superior Court accuse the owners of the Sunshine Childcare & Preschool of assault and battery, negligence and intentionally causing emotional distress for children. One suit alleges an owner called a child “fat and disgusting” and forced her to run.

The suits seek unspecified punitive damages.

Brian Champion, the attorney representing the three families, tells The Portland Press Herald (https://bit.ly/1k4F06D ) that the allegations are based on fact not only supported by a state investigation but on “our investigations and also eyewitness accounts.”

The owners have not filed a response to the lawsuits. They previously said they were victims of a “witch hunt.”
