BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - The University of South Carolina Beaufort is asking for almost $60 million from Beaufort County for campus projects including a convention center, a baseball stadium and renovations to its arts center.
The Beaufort Gazette reports (https://bit.ly/1tevGPW ) that university officials made the request Monday to a county sales tax commission.
The commission is receiving proposals to be financed with a proposed 1 percent county sales tax. Other groups have already asked for more than $290 million.
USC-Beaufort says its projects will be built at its Hilton Head Gateway Campus. The most expensive is a $35 million convention center. It would include a 4,000-seat arena, conference rooms, offices and locker rooms.
USC-Beaufort Chancellor Jane Upshaw says it could be used for academics as well as concerts, conferences and other community events.
