Polls closed in Arkansas for primary voters

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - Polls have closed for voters in this year’s primary and judicial elections in Arkansas.

Tuesday’s election was the first statewide enforcement of a state law requiring voters to present identification before casting ballots. The Republican-led Legislature last year approved a voter ID law, saying Arkansas needed one to cut down on fraud. Voters without an ID could cast a provisional ballot.

Party primaries for governor and two U.S. House seats were at the top of the ballot Tuesday. Neither of the Democratic and Republican candidates in a high-profile U.S. Senate race drew a primary challenger and will automatically advance to the Nov. 4 general election.

The Secretary of State’s office predicted that about 20 percent of the state’s 1.6 million registered voters would make it to the polls Tuesday.
