FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - Fort Wayne’s first female fire chief has resigned from that position but will remain with the department as a captain.

Mayor Tom Henry announced Tuesday that Chief Amy Biggs’s resignation is effective June 1. That would be one day short of two years since she became chief.

Public Safety Director Rusty York said the decision for Biggs to step down was entirely her own. He said the position is a stressful, around-the-clock job.

Biggs issued a statement saying she was proud to have represented the Fire Department and the city and she looked forward to her return to the department’s Operations Division.
