BRIGHTON, Colo. (AP) - Lawyers for a man charged with killing two teen boys who allegedly tried to blackmail him last summer say he shot them in self-defense.

Investigators say William Otto killed 15-year-old Jonathan Gonzalez and 16-year-old Gustavo Espinosa-Gamboa after they allegedly asked for money for a cell phone video showing Otto asking to perform a sexual act. During the opening of his trial Monday in Brighton, defense lawyers argued that the boys grabbed a knife when the attempt failed, reverting to an original plan to rob Otto.

The Denver Post (https://bit.ly/1k2canp ) reports that the defense argues that the video hasn’t been found and that the friends who will testify about it were in on the robbery plot.

Otto is accused of burying the bodies on farmland near the Nebraska border before turning himself in.
