DENVER (AP) - Attorneys for a 24-year-old man accused of stabbing five people to death in a Denver bar say Colorado laws are too broad and fail to limit who is eligible for the death penalty.
During a hearing on Tuesday, defense attorneys asked a Denver judge to declare Colorado’s death penalty laws unconstitutional because it only takes a felony conviction and one of 17 aggravating factors to qualify.
Dexter Lewis faces a possible death sentence and is charged with 16 counts for his role in the attack that left five people dead at Fero’s Bar and Grill in 2012. His charges include first-degree murder, arson and robbery.
According to the Denver Post (https://tinyurl.com/nbfdzvj), two other men charged in the case have accepted plea agreements in exchange for their testimony against Lewis.
