WORCESTER, Mass. (AP) - Opening statements in the trial of a man charged with playing a role in the fatal shooting of a Worcester man 20 years ago are getting underway.

Matteo Trotto is charged with murder in the 1994 slaying of Kevin Harkins.

Prosecutors say Trotto and two co-defendants lured Harkins out of a city bar in February 1994 and shot him in the head after getting into a car with the suspects allegedly because he reneged on an agreement to offer false testimony in a drug case against one of them. His body was never found.

The Telegram & Gazette (https://bit.ly/1qOZIvD ) reports that the 48-year-old Trotto is now serving a state prison sentence on unrelated drug and gun charges.

He has pleaded not guilty.

Openings are Monday following last week’s jury selection.
