OGDEN, Utah (AP) - The driver of an SUV who struck and killed a 48-year-old woman in Ogden says he didn’t see her crossing the street with her granddaughter Saturday night.

Ogden police say a 68-year-old man was driving north on Harrisville Road when he hit the pair about 9 p.m.

Police say the woman and her 8-year-old granddaughter were on their way home from a nearby store.

The Deseret News reports (https://tinyurl.com/lcc5npx) witnesses told police the two appeared to have stopped somewhere in the road to retrieve a sandal that fell off one of their feet.

The woman was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The girl suffered non-life threatening injuries.

Police say neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to have been involved but the case remains under investigation.

No names have been released.
