NEW YORK (AP) - The Queens Zoo says a fawn from the world’s smallest deer species has been born at its facility.

The Southern pudu baby was born at the end of April, and weighed one pound. It could get up to 20 pounds as an adult.

Southern pudu are native to Chile and Argentina. They bark when they sense danger and they’re good jumpers, sprinters and climbers. They’re about 12 inches to 14 inches at the shoulder.

They’ve been designated as a vulnerable species. The Queens Zoo runs a breeding program for the deer.

Another pudu was born at the zoo last year.
