LOS ANGELES (AP) - An East Los Angeles man was killed when the top of a palm tree fell on top of him.

Relatives tell KNBC-TV that 49-year-old Tony Calderon was waiting for a ride to his uncle’s funeral when he was struck by the crown of the tree Saturday morning.

The Los Angeles County Fire department said the victim, who was trapped underneath the debris and downed power lines, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Witnesses told the station they tried to pull Calderon, but the tree crown was too heavy.
