HEARNE, Texas (AP) - More than 100 mourners have turned out to celebrate the life of a 93-year-old Central Texas woman who was fatally shot during an armed confrontation with a police officer.

A funeral was held Saturday afternoon in Hearne (hern) for Pearlie Golden.

Golden was killed May 6 at her home by a Hearne police officer responding to a report of a woman brandishing a gun. The Hearne City Council later voted to fire Officer Stephen Stem.

The Eagle newspaper reports neighbor Margie Caballero described Golden as “the sweetest woman that could be.” Cedric Chappel (shu-PEL’), who grew up next door to Golden, told KBTX-TV that she was “a very very positive person” in the community.

Texas Rangers are helping investigate. The case is expected to go to a grand jury.
