BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) - The U.S. Coast Guard will joined by local fire and police departments for a public event on the Buffalo waterfront to promote Boating Safety Day.

Coast Guard officials say the crew based at the station on Buffalo’s Lake Erie harbor will be hosting Saturday’s event being held at the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority Boat Harbor off Furhmann Boulevard.

A Coast Guard helicopter demonstration will be conducted over the outer harbor and boat education and safety awareness booths will be set up in the parking lot. The Coast Guard Auxiliary will offer free vessel safety checks for boaters.

Also participating are multiple agencies that make up the Advanced Local Emergency Response Team, including fire and police departments, the Coast Guard and eastern Lake Erie rescue team.

The event kicks off National Safe Boating Week.
