MERRILLVILLE, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say a 4-year-old northwest Indiana boy who found a handgun in his parents’ bedroom died from a head wound when the gun discharged.

Cash Irby Jr. of Merrillville was pronounced dead Saturday morning at a local hospital.

Merrillville Police Cmdr. Jeff Rice says Irby took a gun from his parents’ bedroom and went to his room, where the gun discharged.



The Lake County coroner’s office listed the boy’s cause of death as an accidental gunshot wound to the head.

Irby’s second cousin, Kelly White-Gibson, tells The Times of Munster (https://bit.ly/1jH6olR ) the boy climbed shelves in a closet to get the gun from the back of a top shelf. She says the family kept the handgun for protection.

The boy’s parents and two siblings were home at the time.
