OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) - A five-year old girl has been sworn as a deputy of the Thurston County sheriff’s office.

Thurston County Sheriff John Snaza pinned a badge on Lucy Boyd during a ceremony Friday in Olympia. She’ll take over the post of sheriff on August 21.

Boyd, who was diagnosed with leukemia in 2012, is in remission.
