GADSDEN, Ala. (AP) - DeKalb County Sheriff Jimmy Harris says people claiming to be investigators with his department are calling people and telling them to send money to a pre-determined location.

The sheriff says the callers are using the names of real investigators, but the calls are a scam. He describes the scam as widespread.

Harris says the sheriff’s department never solicits money for any reason. He is urging anyone who receives a call to get as much information as possible and then contact law enforcement.
