TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) - Tempe police say an Arizona State University graduate and his mother were hit by a car while walking back from his graduation ceremony.

Sgt. Michael Pooley says 30-year-old Anthony Pelot and his mother, Denise Durocher, had just left the graduation Wednesday morning when they were struck by a Ford Mustang.

Pooley tells KPHO-TV (https://bit.ly/1jGwsgT) that 22-year-old Andrew Merriman lost control of his vehicle and Durocher suffered serious injuries that will likely impact her for the rest of her life.

Pelot was treated at the scene.

Pooley says Merriman, of New River, had been drinking at a bar prior to the incident and was driving with a suspended license.

He has been booked on charges of aggravated DUI, aggravated assault and two counts of endangerment.
