ANCHORAGE, Alaska (AP) - Anchorage fire officials are urging suburban residents to take precautions against wildfires by creating “defensible spaces” around their homes.
The Anchorage Fire Department recommends people keep yards clear of firewood and lay down gravel to create a buffer between woods and homes.
KTUU-TV says (https://is.gd/CMb7YD ) the fire department is also helping by thinning out a wooded area in the Driftwood Bay neighborhood of Eagle River.
Open campfires are banned in all state and municipal parks.
Fire crews can inspect homes to see if there is enough defensible space. Residents may be eligible for partial reimbursement of household fireproofing costs.
