UNION VALE, N.Y. (AP) - Police say a 73-year-old woman has died after part of a roof collapsed on her as she and her husband helped a friend toss out items at a Hudson Valley home.

The Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office says Virginia Neville and her husband were putting things from the house in the town of Union Vale into a garbage container around 5 p.m. Thursday when a large roof overhang separated from the home and fell on her.

Deputies say she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Officials say the Nevilles were helping a friend clean out her house, which is owned by another person who wasn’t present at the time of the accident.

Deputies say the death has been ruled accidental and criminal charges aren’t expected to be filed.
