Spike in Staten Island rabies cases

NEW YORK (AP) - The city’s health department reports a big increase in the number of documented rabies cases on Staten Island for 2013.

There were 6 cases reported in 2012 and 49 last year.

There were just 4 documented cases in the rest of the city last year.

The Advance (https://bit.ly/1szXxrn ) says Assemblyman Joseph Borelli is urging health officials to curb the problem before the summer season.

He says “trap, vaccinate and release” is considered a successful approach.

Another technique is planting wooded areas with food that contains a rabies vaccine.
