JORDAN, N.Y. (AP) - The former athletic director for a central New York school district has been charged with stealing nearly $13,000 from the district.
State police say 44-year-old Eric Varney of Clay was arrested Thursday and charged with grand larceny.
Troopers say their investigation determined Varney stole $12,729 from the admissions fund of the Jordan-Elbridge School District located just west of Syracuse.
Police say the theft occurred between the 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 school years while Varney was serving as the athletic director. He resigned from his job last month after district officials launched an investigation into money missing from tickets sold for sports events.
School officials say he has paid back the money.
Varney was arraigned in Elbridge Town Court and released on his own recognizance. It couldn’t be determined if he has a lawyer.
