SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - A 60-year-old Kearns woman is recovering in the hospital after police say her adult son beat her with an ax, then held her hostage inside her home.

Authorities say he also held captive his 24-year-old sister, who sustained no injuries Friday.

Unified Police said in a statement the 39-year-old Jon Winter began arguing with his mother in the garage about 5:30 a.m. Friday.

Police arrived about 8:45 a.m. and spotted the man holding an ax in the open garage.

Officers used a Taser on the man three times after he did not heed orders to drop the weapon.

Emergency crews took him to a hospital for a mental health evaluation.

He has been booked into Salt Lake County jail, where he faces charges including attempted homicide and aggravated kidnapping.
