LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - The Elephant Butte Irrigation District board has set a river water allotment for Dona Ana County farmers that’s nearly twice as large as last year.
But the Las Cruces News-Sun reports (https://goo.gl/sAz8jc) that it’s still a long way from what the district considers a full amount for the season and a sign that multiyear river-water drought is ongoing.
The district set the allotment Wednesday and decided that famers will get six acre-inches of water per irrigable acre for the summer.
It’s almost double last year’s 3.5 acre-inches per acre. Officials considered 2013 the worst in nearly a century of local irrigation district history.
This year’s amount is one-sixth of what the district considers a full allotment for the year.
