ROCHESTER, N.Y. (AP) - A 49-year-old upstate New York man has been sentenced to 25 years to life in prison for murdering a woman in her apartment.

Supreme Court Justice Alexander Renzi gave Darrell Boyd the maximum sentence on Wednesday in connection with the 2007 death of Katharina Lawn.

Authorities said Boyd brutally beat and strangled Lawn in her Rochester apartment, then set a fire in an attempt to cover up the crime. Lawn was found beaten and asphyxiated on a burning bed.

Boyd’s DNA was found underneath Lawn’s fingernails and became a critical piece of evidence in the case.

Boyd has been in custody since his arrest last May and will begin serving his sentence immediately.

Police described it as a cold case that was reopened and investigated in the past year.
