LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The Pulaski County clerk has resumed issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples after a judge struck down a law that barred the practice.
Pulaski County Clerk Larry Crane says that his office began issuing marriage licenses again to same-sex couples immediately Thursday after receiving Judge Chris Piazza’s order. Piazza ruled that the law barring county clerks from issuing marriage licenses to same-sex couples is unconstitutional.
Pulaski County has issued more than half of the marriage licenses received by gay couples in Arkansas since last week. The clerk’s office had suspended issuing marriage licenses to gay couples after an Arkansas Supreme Court ruling Wednesday.
By 3:30 p.m. Thursday, the county had issued five licenses to same-sex couples since Piazza’s new ruling, including one to a couple from Georgia.
