ROCKFORD, Ill. (AP) - Prosecutors have filed new charges against a northern Illinois man accused of killing his wife.
Todd C. Smith is facing murder charges for the death of his wife, 30-year-old Katrina Smith of Machesney Park.
The Rockford Register Star reports (https://bit.ly/1sS3z90 ) the new indictment replaces the initial one issued in 2012 and doubles the number of criminal counts a jury might eventually consider.
The updated document means Smith could face life in prison if he’s convicted.
Katrina Smith disappeared in October 2012. Her body was found in the Rock River a month later.
Prosecutors say Todd Smith beat his wife to death with a baseball bat before throwing her body in the water. He’s pleaded not guilty.
