PROVIDENCE, R.I. (AP) - Rhode Island’s Coastal Resources Management Council has unanimously approved plans for a wind farm off Block Island.
Deepwater Wind plans to build five turbines off the island and a transmission cable between the island and Narragansett.
Jeffrey Grybowski, the chief executive of the company, tells the Providence Journal (https://bit.ly/1lkYikh ) the CRMC vote was a critical step for the $300 million project.
It comes after the award last week by the state Department of Environmental Management of permits for dredging and other construction work
The company is still awaiting approval for the project from the Army Corps of Engineers.
The Block Island turbines would be the first of the company hopes will be 200 it plans to build in Rhode Island Sound after winning leases last summer.
