TACOMA, Wash. (AP) - Pierce County prosecutors have upgraded a charge against a 30-year-old Lewis-McChord soldier accused of fatally injuring his baby daughter at their home in DuPont.

Dwayne Cowart had been charged with child assault. That was changed to second-degree murder after the death last month of Bella Cowart.

The News Tribune reports (https://bit.ly/1jfWk92 ) Cowart is a specialist in the 42nd Military Police Brigade. He called for help at the home March 24 saying his daughter was unresponsive.

Prosecutors say medical scans suggest the baby was slammed or thrown into something.
