Sitka officials look for bear that ate dog

SITKA, Alaska (AP) - Wildlife officials in Sitka are looking for a bear that killed a dog earlier this week.

The Daily Sitka Sentinel reports (https://is.gd/jO1Mhm) the killing took place Monday night on Halibut Point Road, just beyond the state ferry terminal.

Wildlife biologist Phil Mooney says he believes it is the same bear that had been spotted earlier in the area.

A homeowner let her three dogs out Monday night and soon heard one yelp. The other two dogs ran off, but she found the bear eating the third.

Officials searched the area Tuesday, and found signs of the bear but not the animal itself. They also found the dog’s remains about 75 yard from the house.

The search will continue Wednesday. The homeowner’s other two dogs returned home in good shape.
