RIO RANCHO, N.M. (AP) - A Rio Rancho man described as a guardian of a 3-year-old girl is accused of child abuse in her death.

A criminal complaint states that 35-year-old Jay Chee Hood told police that he was playing a game with Addelina DeLuna when he tossed her onto her bed and she then bounced onto the floor and hit her head.

The Albuquerque Journal (https://ow.ly/wPLyR ) reports the girl was hospitalized the evening of May 7 and that she died the next morning when taken off life support.

The complaint says the girl’s brain was bleeding and that doctors told police her injuries were not accidental.

District Attorney Lemuel Martinez says Hood faces a life sentence if he is convicted of the child-abuse charge.

A court docket does not list an attorney for Hood.
