ST. LOUIS (AP) - The Humane Society of Missouri is offering a $2,500 reward in the search for the person who stuffed a puppy into a backpack and tossed it in a trash bin.

The Humane Society says the dead female boxer-mix puppy was found Tuesday behind a vacant house in the St. Louis County town of Overland. Two of the dog’s siblings were found alive.

Officials aren’t sure if the dead dog was alive when it was put into the backpack. An employee of a company cleaning the vacant home found the puppies and contacted the Humane Society’s Animal Cruelty Task Force.

The surviving dogs are underweight and are being cared for at the Humane Society headquarters in St. Louis.
