GRETNA, La. (AP) - Jefferson Parish public school teachers are about to get pay raises for the first time in several years.

WVUE-TV reports (https://bit.ly/1mYr6BD ) the School Board approved a new plan Tuesday to compensate teachers and staff for three years of frozen salaries.

It means teachers who’ve worked in the system for over three years and were rated as “effective,” could see a raise of up to $2,400.

Superintendent James Meza told board members that their hard decisions of the past have allowed them now to give a raise and sustain it.

The pay increases would cost the Jefferson Parish school district about $10.5 million a year.

The changes are set to take effect for the 2014-2015 school year.
