VANDALIA, Ill. (AP) - Investigators say a fatal fire at a central Illinois apartment building was deliberately set.

The Effingham Daily News reports (https://bit.ly/1sNMFbz ) the Illinois State Fire Marshal’s office says last weekend’s fire in Vandalia (vah-DAYL’-yuh) was arson.

The fire killed 63-year-old Jerry Varis, whose body was found in the building by firefighters who were trying to extinguish the blaze.



Vandalia Chief of Police Jeff Ray says a $2,500 reward is being offered for information about the fire, which remains under investigation.

The town is about 70 miles east of St. Louis.
