NESQUEHONING, Pa. (AP) - A two-car crash in northeastern Pennsylvania involving a police cruiser has claimed the life of a woman.

State police at Lehighton said 69-year-old Carola Sauers was a passenger in a 2007 Toyota Yaris driven by 64-year-old Michael Sauers at the time of Monday evening’s crash in Nesquehoning.

Investigators said the crash happened when 25-year-old Stephen Homanko, a part-time Nesquehoning police officer, lost control of his 2009 Ford Crown Victoria while attempting to negotiate a curve and crossed into the opposing traffic lane.

Carola Sauers died at a hospital. Police said Michael Sauers had severe injuries and Homanko was listed as having moderate injuries.

An investigation is underway.
