CHICAGO (AP) - Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka is honoring more than a dozen young Asian-American leaders for their community service.
The 14 honorees were nominated by Topinka’s Asian-American Advisory Council. The awards were given out Monday and are part of the Riverside Republican’s office celebration of Asian-American Heritage Month. They include students and young professionals who Topinka says have distinguished themselves through service and leadership.
Their accomplishments include overseas mission work; tutoring younger students; volunteering at soup kitchens and working with the developmentally disabled.
Topinka also gave a leadership award to the nonprofit Asian-Americans Advancing Justice. The organization is dedicated to empowering the Asian-American community through advocacy, research and education.
