DETROIT (AP) - A company controlled by Ambassador Bridge owner Manuel “Matty” Moroun has stopped its efforts to buy a vacant high school in Detroit.
The Detroit News reports (https://bit.ly/1iLtVpU ) Monday that a representative of the company wrote in a letter to the Detroit school board that Southwestern High School’s poor condition factored into the decision to drop the bid.
A state loan board earlier this year gave the school district permission to sell Southwestern for $1 million to a company that wants to redevelop the site for homes and businesses.
A subsidiary of Moroun’s Crown Enterprises Inc. later bid $1.175 million for the 99-year-old building. The company said it wanted to use it for offices and homes for nonprofits.
