SULPHUR, La. (AP) - A Sulphur police officer has resigned after an investigation found he violated department policy when he fatally shot a dog on April 28.
Police Chief Lewis Coats says in a news release that Officer Brian Thierbach violated departmental procedure regarding use of force and personal conduct and behavior.
Coats says Thierbach resigned before final disciplinary action was taken.
The American Press reports (https://bit.ly/1mKNVgr ) witnesses to the shooting have disputed Thierbach’s claim that he shot the dog only after it tried to bite him.
Coats says the Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office is conducting a criminal investigation.
