HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - A Singapore-based company and its senior engineer are scheduled to be sentenced in connection with discharging oily waste into the ocean.
Odfjell Asia II Pte Ltd. and the crew member, Ramil Leuterio, are scheduled to be sentenced Wednesday in federal court in Hartford. They pleaded guilty in March to violating the Act to Prevent Pollution from Ships.
The company agreed to pay a $1.2 million fine and take steps to prevent maritime pollution.
Prosecutors say the company operated a petroleum/chemical tanker ship that discharged machinery space bilge water three times in international waters between October 2011 and October 2012.
Leuterio’s attorney is seeking probation for what he called an environmental record-keeping crime.
Prosecutors say he should get a sentence of 10 to 16 months, saying he falsified records.
