CONWAY, Ark. (AP) - The court clerk for one Arkansas county says she will not issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples when the court opens Monday.
The office of Faulkner County Clerk Melinda Reynolds released a statement Sunday evening to local media saying it will not be issuing licenses to same-sex couples. Circuit Judge Christopher Piazza struck down Arkansas’ ban on same-sex marriage in a decision released Friday. He did not stay his ruling pending appeals, meaning marriage licenses can be issued to same-sex couples. Fifteen licenses were issued to same-sex couples in Carroll County on Saturday.
Arkansas Attorney General Dustin McDaniel announced he will appeal the ruling to the State Supreme Court.
The statement from Faulkner County says the State Supreme Court must strike down a state law, not a circuit judge.
