ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - Gov. Andrew Cuomo has signed legislation adding five days to the period for gathering petition signatures to run in New York’s state and local primary elections this year.

The extension accounts for observance of the two-day Jewish festival of Shavuot. That’s when the first day of petition signing would have otherwise fallen.

The change moves the first signature-gathering day to May 29. That’s 42 days before the July 30 petition deadline instead of 37 days.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver says the change will ensure that observant Jews have a voice.
