BISMARCK, N.D. (AP) - State officials are ramping up efforts to reduce littering and glass container violations on the Missouri River.

North Dakota State Engineer Todd Sando says new signs warning the public about fines have been posted at access sites along the river.

The fine for littering on beaches and sandbars carries a maximum penalty of $250, and possession of glass containers is a $100 infraction.

Sando says bare feet and broken class on beaches “makes for a serious health hazard.”
