MARIETTA, Ga. (AP) - Marietta is getting ready to observe the 150th anniversary of the battle of Kennesaw Mountain.

During the 1864 battle, Confederate forces pushed back an assault by Union Gen. William Sherman’s army. About 3,000 Union and 1,000 Confederate soldiers died in the fighting.

The battle came as Sherman advanced toward Atlanta, which his forces ultimately captured.

The Marietta Daily Journal (https://bit.ly/SJKSbc ) reports that Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park will offer three days of programs, battlefield tours and living history demonstrations from June 26- 29. Two conventions related to the Civil War will also be held in the area. The Sons of Union Veterans will meet there in August, while the National Civil War Medicine Conference will arrive in October.
