BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) - Authorities say a Jefferson County sheriff’s deputy shot and killed a 21-year-old man who they say tried to run over the deputy with a car.

Al.com reports (https://bit.ly/1iBuPFi) that the shooting happened near a Walmart on Parkway East after 9 p.m. Friday.

Jefferson County sheriff’s Chief Deputy Randy Christian said deputies interrupted a drug deal in progress, and one of the suspects tried to run a deputy over. Christian said the deputy then shot the man in self-defense. He was pronounced dead at a hospital.
