GULFPORT, Miss. (AP) - A Biloxi woman was been ordered to spend more than three years in prison and repay more than $40,000 for disability benefits she received for a child who did not live with her.
The Sun-Herald reports (https://bit.ly/1kEuqnE ) that a federal judge also fined the woman, 34-year-old Christin Lynn Burnett, $2,000.
She was sentenced Thursday after pleading guilty to the theft of government funds.
A federal grand jury indicted Burnett in September.
Court papers show Burnett received Supplemental Security Income benefits for her daughter from September 2005 through July 2011 while the child lived with her father in another state.
The child had lived with her father since August 2005, and he received none of the money to help support the child, according to a court document.
Social Security officials learned of the theft after the child’s father applied for SSI benefits for the child in May 2011.
Burnett also is known by the last names of Dalton and Nalley.
