BEAUFORT, S.C. (AP) - Authorities say a St. Helena Island woman killed a 2-year-old girl she was watching by hitting the child in the head with a dumbbell while she was working out.
Deputies said the child was hit Tuesday as 26-year-old LaQuana Chisolm was watching her and died two days later at the hospital.
Investigators say Chisolm first told deputies the girl had fallen off a bed, but later said she was hit with the weight while exercising.
Authorities say Chisolm didn’t seek medical help for the child. Instead, a family member called 911 three hours after she was hit after finding the girl unresponsive on a couch.
Chisolm is charged with homicide by child abuse. She remains in the Beaufort County jail and it wasn’t known if she had a lawyer.
