Maine aquatic resource projects get $1.2 million

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) - More than $1.2 million is going toward enhancing and preserving wetlands and other habitats across Maine.

The Maine Natural Resource Conversation Program is handing out grants to 12 projects that aim to improve Maine’s aquatic resources. The program is administered through the Natural Conservancy, the Maine Department of Environmental Protection and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.

Among the projects that received grants is the Atlantic Salmon Federation. The organization is building a fishway on a dam blocking Souadabscook Stream in the Penobscot River watershed to restore sea-run alewives and other fish to the area.

Other groups getting grants include the Damariscotta River Association and the Maine Coast Heritage Trust.
